2308 Iddaburg
With its striking location on the rocky outcrop, St Idda's Church is a historic place of pilgrimage in Toggenburg. The history and charisma of the Iddaburg make it a place of strength for many people. The new restaurant wants to show respect for the existing building and its history, while at the same time setting a self-confident and widely recognisable sign of a new era.
The new restaurant inscribes a triangular figure on the Idda Castle plateau. Two sides of the triangle take up the steeply sloping topographical contour lines. The third side of the triangular figure, together with the church and the old trees, forms a spatial conclusion to the large church forecourt and the outdoor seating area. The two buildings, the church and the restaurant, are clearly autonomous on the plateau. Only together, however, can they give the outdoor space a clear spatial setting.
The restaurant deliberately appears as a single-storey building on the plateau. The ensemble of church and vicarage, which is worthy of protection, is thus juxtaposed with a building of compatible dimensions. In addition, the signalling effect of the church tower in the expanse of the Toggenburg landscape is thus best preserved.
