2406 Helsinki

The typical neoclassical Helsinki block structure can be perceived as inaccessible or even repellent on an urban level. In contrast to the Helsinki block, we propose a playfull, open and permeable « village » with strong connections to the surrounding urban spaces. Instead of a classical lobby we propose a public interior boulevard that provides spaces for discovery, small exhibitions, creative platforms, recovery and surprising encounters.

All important public spaces are located on the groundfloor – shop, cafe, library and workshop spaces. The location of a major gallery space on the groundfloor allows for a direct public interaction with the exhibtion. The location of the shop, cafe, library and workshop spaces on the groundfloor allows for a direct and easy access outside the museums opening hours. A grand public terrace is staging the view over the harbor and provides direct access to the bar and event spaces.

All technical rooms are placed in the attics to avoid building underground and to provide for short connections. A heatpump using seewater, a PV system, thermoactive elements for cooling and heating, etc. strive for an eco-friendly and innovative solution. Concrete Cores are combined with a vertical timber structure and a TCC floorsystem (Timber-Concrete Composite) contributing to a low carbon footprint whilst ensuring a stable interior climate.
