1521 Staffeln School

The meandering form of the huge school building allows for a differentiated integration within the urban context whilst the compact volume meets energetic and organisational demands. The sports hall is mainly built underground and appears rather as an element of natural terrain than a built object. Two spacious courtyards lighten the interior of the building with day light and they both have different themes of greenery and – along with the different openings in the floor slabs – allow for vertical views, thus giving the interior transparency and providing orientation.

All classrooms are organised in clusters on both upper floors and surround a spacious interior zone on all floors. A cluster consists of a mix of flexible classrooms and single or double group rooms. The traditional corridor is replaced by an open « learning-landscape » as the heart of the building. Free standing partly transparent modules divide this open space into manageable zones.
